Hi,
Yamaha 1200XLT 3cyl, 2-stroke
We bought this ski new in 2003 and it has about 90 hours on it. Garage kept with very little issues til now. This ski has now been in the shop for 2 months and 4 trips, each time they say it's fixed we pick it up Friday only to bring it back Monday with it performing exactly the same!!!!
Ski sat all winter with ethanol fuel in tank. I got it started but was concerned about how it was running. Pumped the tank empty, changed the spark plugs, added a fuel conditioner to help deal with any leftover ethanol left in the system. Ran the ski, it achieved 5,300rpms and 37-38 mph.
Took it to the shop who used " a little" ether and got it running.....made it clear what I had done and that I already had it running. 2 visits later convinced them I believe it needed carbs rebuilt (the ski had never had any work done previously). They finally rebuilt the carbs, etc and has been back again since that trip but it is still running around 5,300 rpms and 38 mph.......
It's slow to plane, doesn't acheive full rpm and slow top end. Every now and then it will seem to "take-off" but it's rare and only last 1-2 seconds.
Someone my father knows said it's likely the Catalytic converter, I didn't know a 2-stroke had one. From what I'm reading now installing the D-plate is common a potential fix for this....correct? Or am I looking at another problem altogether?
So I call RIVA this AM to ask their opinion and try to get a D-plate ASAP. They tell me it sounds like the impeller liner and to check that first!!! The guy wanted to help but it seemed to be in a real hurry so I'm not convinced.
So, I'm reasonably mechanical but are either of these items easily done in home garage and fairly simple to install. AND: Is it a part swap or will the ski need new tuning, etc to run properly? Are instruction "out there" for installing either of these?
So, what's wrong with this thing? It's not going back to that dealer!!!!!....and most dealers are now 2-3 week out to look at it.
Please help.
Thanks!
I didn't find the right solution from the Internet.
